A Climb With Jesus

When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who were apprenticed to him, the committed, climbed with him. Arriving at a quiet place, he sat down and taught his climbing companions. —Matthew 5:1-2 MSG

Scholars are quick to point out the similarities between Moses climbing Mount Sinai to receive the law and Jesus climbing this mountain to proclaim the Kingdom.

What’s really interesting is that when the nation of Israel heard the voice of God, they looked at Moses and said, “you speak to us and we will listen.  Don’t let god speak to us or we will die!” (Exodus 20:19).

But in Matthew 5, Jesus invites us, “Come with me. Let’s climb this mountain together.  You don’t need a mediator.  I am the mediator.  You don’t need another go-between.  I am your go-between.  I’m inviting you to climb!”

“Most people have uphill dreams, but downhill habits. You have to intentionally turn downhill sliding into uphill climbing.” —John Maxwell

Uphill DREAMS demand uphill HABITS.

Most of us have uphill dreams... we have big dreams! Especially at the start of a new year...

• Dreams for a dynamic marriage

• Dreams for a growing relationship

• Dreams for financial freedom

• Dreams about our fitness and health

• Dreams about our growing in our relationship with God

The problem?  Most of us have uphill dreams, but downhill habits.

When Jesus calls you to climb with him, you can bet it won’t be easy! Nothing worthwhile is ever easy! Ever! But you can also bet that when Jesus calls you to climb it’s for your benefit, and it’s always worth it!

When He calls you to climb higher, it makes you stronger, not weaker. Even more, when He calls you to climb, you can count on grace to give you the power to reach the top.

When it comes to following Jesus — being His disciple — it usually involves at least three things:

1.     Separation – break out of your comfort zone

2.     Elevation – start looking up

3.     Transformation – allow the Kingdom of God to be formed in you

If you feel “lost in the crowd” maybe it’s because you don’t belong IN the crowd. You belong WITH Jesus and you belong TO Jesus and He will always call you to GO HIGHER!

You weren’t made to be AVERAGE. You were made to be AWESOME.

You weren’t made to live like a BEGGAR. You were made for something BETTER.

You aren’t a COWARD. You were created to be a COURAGEOUS CONQUEROR.

You were not made to be a DOORMAT. You were made to be DYNAMIC.

You weren’t destined to get EJECTED. God planned for you to be EFFECTIVE.

You weren’t made to be dominated by FEAR. You are a person who lives by FAITH.

You are not a FAILURE. You are FIERCE.

You are not GARBAGE.  You are an object of extravagant GRACE.

You are not INCOMPETENT.  You are INVALUABLE.

You are not a LOSER. You are a LEADER.

You are not MEDIOCRE.  You are MAGNIFICENT.

You are not a VICTIM. You are VICTORIOUS.

You used to be a SINNER.  Now you’re a SAINT and a SON or DAUGHTER of God!

You’ve moved from being unsuccessful, to becoming undefeated!

That’s the trajectory when you begin to follow JESUS!
